Budgam District Health Profile

Overview

Budgam District was established in 1979 through an administrative reorganization, separating it from Srinagar District. Named after its headquarters, Budgam was historically referred to as “Sri Partap Singh Pora,” a title in honor of Maharaja Partap Singh, a prominent Dogra King. Budgam spans an area of 1,371 square kilometers, bounded by Baramulla to the north and northwest and Srinagar to the northeast and southeast.

Of its 501 villages, 480 are inhabited while 21 remain uninhabited. The district, at an average elevation of 5,281 feet above sea level, experiences similar weather to Srinagar, with heavier snowfall and colder temperatures in its higher regions. Although Budgam generally receives adequate rainfall, its Kandi areas sometimes face insufficient rain, affecting crops. Conversely, the low-lying regions adjacent to the Jehlum River are marshy and vulnerable to flooding during heavy rains.

The district, once neglected, has seen progress since becoming a separate entity, with notable improvements in socio-economic conditions and education. Education initiatives like the Sheksha Abhiyan have increased school enrollment for children aged 4–11 to 75%. Agriculture remains the primary occupation, with modernization efforts underway to enhance productivity.
